This edition of the Update presents the recent discussions on the criminalization of indigenous peoples’ rights defenders, along with the discussions around indigenous women’s rights and indigenous migration.
|Summary Note 1 (August 2016)||9TH SESSION OF THE EXPERT MECHANISM ON THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES (EMRIP)
The 9th EMRIP session took place from the 11th to the 15th of July in Geneva, and focused in three main areas: the revision of the mandate, the panel on indigenous persons with disabilities and the study on the right to health. One of the outstanding issues has been to establish more cooperation among the different UN mechanisms and bodies, with regard to persons with disabilities, Business and Human Rights, or health issues.
|Summary Note 2 (October 2016)||33TH SESSION OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL (HRC)
The 33rd session of the HRC took place in September in Geneva, and was very important to Indigenous Peoples. This Summary Notes relates the informal negotiations held for the SRRIP mandate, the EMRIP thematic studies and the revision of the EMRIP mandate. It also contains the report of the panel of the annual half-day discussion on Indigenous Peoples on violence against indigenous women and girls, including those with disabilities, and the dialogue between the SRRIP and the EMRIP Chair.
